India’s Squad For ICC Cricket World Cup 2015

India’s 15 to retain ICC Cricket World Cup 2015

Finally, the Indian Team Selected the Players for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. The India’s World Cup Squad for 2015 is formed.

The much awaited squad for India’s world title defence has been announced. The team was announced by the Sandeep Patil-led selection panel. There are no major surprises in the team selection.

MS Dhoni will lead a 15-strong team India to the World Cup Downunder. The squad boasts of five batsmen, two wicket-keeper batsmen, three all-rounders, four seamers and a specialist spinner.

In a team which comprises of many match winners, most of the players automatically selected themselves on basis of their form. Though there are a few surprise inclusions in the squad being the likes of Akshar Patel and Stuart Binny. The most debated inclusion of previous World Cup’s Man of the Tournament ‘Yuvraj Singh’ has been rejected by the selection panel. Instead it’s Ravindra Jadeja who has managed to make it to the final 15 for the world cup. Jadeja, inspite of nursing a bad shoulder, has made it to the squad after the selection committee discussed his injury with the team Physio. One more injury prone selection is of the pace bowling spearhead Ishant Sharma who has problems with his knee.

BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel defended the selection of the not-so-fit Ravindra Jadeja in the squad saying that he would be match-fit within the next ten days as confirmed by the team Physio. Regarding Ishant’s injury, he said that the player is suffering from a minor niggle and would be completely fit within days.

When asked about Yuvraj’s exclusion from the side, Patel was quick to inform that they had discussed about the player during the selection process but they decided to not to select him due to his lack of form on the international circuit for quite sometime now.

Barring Indian team captain MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina, all the other players in the current World Cup squad are playing their first World Cup. The squad is a good mix of experience and youth.

Though the team boasts of several match winners but there have been increasing concerns because of the poor show of some of the batsmen and the bowlers in alien conditions downunder in the current test series.

Players like Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma are yet to find the touch in tough Australian conditions as seen from their performances in the Border-Gavasakar test series, currently in progress. They have come from a string of low scores overseas and both of them have even lost their places in the final eleven for the last test match of the ongoing series which would have done their confidence no good. Ajinkya Rahane, being the only in-form opener is expected to be one of the favourite to open the batting; whether his partner will be Dhawan or Rohit, remains to be seen.

Barring these two, the rest of the batting line up is in good form with Virat Kohli being in the form of his life. The middle order boasts of experience in the form of Suresh Raina and none other than the captain, MS Dhoni, himself. MS Dhoni would like to add a third World Cup title – previous two being the T-20 World Cup in 2007 and the 50 over World Cup in 2011-to his cabinet to go along with the Champions Trophy title India won in the testing conditions in England and in the process, become the first captain in history to do so.

If these three continue the way they are at the moment, there is no stopping the Indian line-up scoring big runs Downunder. Due to such a terrific middle order, even Ambati Rayudu – who himself is in good touch- might have to wait for his turn.

Turning our attention to the all-rounders, this department can prove to be the major hinderance to India’s hopes of retaining the title. The likes of Akshar Patel and Stuart Binny are newcomers on the world stage. They lack the experience of International Cricket big time and it would be a test of character for both these to perform away from home in hostile conditions. The third all-rounder in Ravindra Jadeja -though experienced- is nursing a shoulder injury. He needs to quickly get fit and get some games under his belt before the ’44 day’s extravaganza’ commences.

India’s bowling has left a lot to be desired in the ongoing test series downunder and as always continues to be a weaklink in this Indian squad. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami are certainties when it comes to donning the colored clothes for the country. There would be a tussle for the third seamers spot between the ‘Experienced’ Ishant Sharma and the ‘Express’ Umesh Yadav, unless the team decides to field all the four fast bowlers on board.

Ravichandran Ashwin, being the lone specialist-spinner in the side, has been given the duty to not only choke runs in the middle overs but also come up with some crucial wickets.

All said and done, this squad has certainly got within itself to go all the way and retain the tag of  The World Champions.
